Sex Work From Home (2020) - VICE

Image
This is again another VICE short documentary that I feel is extremely important to look at given the current circumstances we find our self in. This documentary is about how some sex workers have had to alter their way of life to maintain a steady incoome; they have achieved this by going to online sites like Onlyfans. This documentary is extremely important to look at as it shows how you can present your documentary in the current climate, this is especially important to look at given the pending lockdown that is likely to occur.  This documentary from an editing standpoint was filled with quite a lot in such a short period of time and this engaging style is something were really looking for. For example, there were multiple shots of one of the women going live on Instagram and they used that footage and cut it into a sequence as she spoke about what she has been doing. There was also a big focus on keeping it exciting so the pace of the edit was faster in some parts, there ...

OnlyFans: The Premium Social Network for Porn | My Life Online (2020) - VICE

Although I've watched many documentaries on varied topics, I still didn't feel as if I found a particular style or aesthetic that I thought would particularly work with this topic. But I realised, if I want to have a contemporary edit I should look for short documentaries that are on social media as they work best in being short, snappy and engaging; more often than not this is achieved through the edit. This is where I found this Vice documentary: OnlyFans: The Premium Social Network for Porn. This is a doc on a gay male with HIV that uses Onlyfans as income and to explore his sexuality.  It's a rather short doc, but I really liked its slower and subtle style. When watching it the edit seemed very simplistic and didn't overpower the video. The titling reveal was very good as it linked directly to the topic it was discussing, this was achieved as it showed a rising viewer count on a video and eventually it formed the title. Overall I can take a lot form this documentary...

Inspiration for Possible Visual Style:

We were discussing how we were going to represent aspects of the sexual work that the Onlyfans worker works in as we are aware we wouldn't be able to show anything too explicit.  This is where we came up with the possible idea of presenting it similarly to this popular video, 'Porn Sex vs Real Sex: The Differences Explained with Food'. As seen in the images, more specifically the chicken image, it shows bondage in a very  light-hearted way; where the exact depiction can be a bit graphic. Another clear example of this is how the represented 'anal sex' with a banana and Nutella! This is a possible way of us presenting the acts we are talking about as B-roll footage and things similar to that.  The issue with going for this style is we would have to adapt the tone of the documentary, as this is quite a colorful light-hearted tone, which could contrast to the deeper tones we may cover. This could though be used as a poetic way just to further push the positive side of i...
