LOCKDOWN x2

The date is the 4th of December and we have just been put into another lockdown, which can only affect our efforts to find a participant. This is just a post to summaries what the situation is currently in country and how I feel it'll affect our plans, but we will have to adapt accordingly. Fortunately we planned for this scenario with more than one idea based on the same topic. It is extremely unfortunate and it has set us back in what we could have possibly done early in the term. But to make sure we get started well we will have to opt with the remote interview and b-roll and hope we find a willing participant in time.

Ebele Okoye - Animator Guest Speaker

This talk was once again on a career I have little interest in, however it was intriguing to hear the process of how Ebele got to where she is and also how she explores topics and stories she is interested in for her work. This was very important to hear as I feel the best work you can produce, no matter what field of work it is, is when your doing it on something you're interested in. One animated video she made was on domestic abuse and only after hearing her discussion after it did I realise this piece had more than one meaning behind it. You could tell how she spoke about it, that this was a project she was very proud of and cared about dearly and I found this very inspiring. The main thing I took from this is that when coming up with ideas to explore, start with what you enjoy as the process of creating the project will be enjoyable and will only help you create a better product.

Simon James - Sound Designer Guest Speaker

This guest lecture, although not in a field I see myself pursuing was very interesting. Simon told us how he got to where he was, the different pieces of work he has produced and more importantly how he managed to capture certain sounds. Overall, what I took from this talk was that it's so important to experiment and try new things. There was a part where he mentioned recording the sounds of an escalator to just see how it sounded, then months down the line this became a beneficial sound to create something different to initially intended. This is something I could possibly do more of as I do often find myself getting comfortable with certain things and maybe I could go out of my comfort zone more to really test my creativity.

Jo Smyth - TV and Film editor (TALK)

Out of all of the people set in to do a talk, this was the one I was most looking forward to as it was someone who is working in the field I find most interesting and entertaining. This talk covered what it is like to be an editor, what could help you in getting yourself there and some insightful anecdotes of struggles during, not just the pandemic but, day to day working life. One thing I took from this was something I heard the year prior in my Industry Projects module, this was that Premiere pro is great to know, but industry standard more often than not is Avid - especially in drama. This is important to know as if this a career path I wish to pursue than this should be something I look to do. Luckily enough there not completely different, the basics of editing are all the same! I also found it intriguing to hear the comments about the disputes she sometimes got into with the director, as I can imagine there are many differing opinions. But as I expected more often than not you wou...

Nudes4Sale (2020) - BBC Three

Image
This documentary follows different women on how they have built their success on the platform Onlyfans. It also delves into the dangers of this site regarding underage registered users. I feel this film holds the biggest blueprint of what I see our documentary turning out as, but only with one main participant. But, for our documentary we will explore a new negative of the site dependent on the individual we have's actual experience. With this one it focuses on the underage users and brushes over the women's personal problems with the app.  In an editing sense again there are things I can take. Once again I'm a big fan of showing the social media and the shots of their online pages. This creates a contemporary aesthetic that we're looking for. I feel the editing strengthened the narrative and the emotion of the film without taking away form any of the information told, which is the best thing it can do; so there are definitely things to take form this film!

Project Idea Developments:

At the current moment we have found it hard to find a participant that would be able to take part, but we are still searching and asking. It seems the pandemic will have a bigger affect on this project than first thought and if we are lucky enough to find a pps we will most likely have to record the interview remotely. This has led to the idea of more of a focus on a self filmed diary being used for things such as b-roll. This is a successful way of presenting the doc as it allows the pps to be more personal and possibly more genuine as in some spots it will just be them recording themselves.  Things they could possibly film could be: Behind the scenes of a shoot for their page Them setting up the shot Film themselves on phone promoting their page These are just a few examples that could be beneficial and more options would depend on what is said throughout the interview. From this we could get b-roll that relates and fit in accordingly. On top of this we could use screen rec...

Sex Work From Home (2020) - VICE

Image
This is again another VICE short documentary that I feel is extremely important to look at given the current circumstances we find our self in. This documentary is about how some sex workers have had to alter their way of life to maintain a steady incoome; they have achieved this by going to online sites like Onlyfans. This documentary is extremely important to look at as it shows how you can present your documentary in the current climate, this is especially important to look at given the pending lockdown that is likely to occur.  This documentary from an editing standpoint was filled with quite a lot in such a short period of time and this engaging style is something were really looking for. For example, there were multiple shots of one of the women going live on Instagram and they used that footage and cut it into a sequence as she spoke about what she has been doing. There was also a big focus on keeping it exciting so the pace of the edit was faster in some parts, there ...
